[Re]Placing Church: Prayer Guide

We believe prayer is foundational in developing a relationship with God. Please use this prayer guide as we walk together through our current Sermon Series, [Re]Placing Church, based on the book of Acts.

June 3: The Promise Changes our Enemies (Saul’s Conversion)

Acts 9: 1- 9

God’s plans were just getting started. Jesus was going to take the most unlikely, and unworthy of individuals, and take his church to the ends of the earth.  As you pray this week, pray for new life (physical, spiritual, emotional) for ourselves and others through the power of God’s spirit.

Personal Prayer

  • Pray that nothing will stand in the way of your salvation: not ignorance, not having walked away in the past, not the fact that you still have questions. Ask God to help you make a leap of faith.
  • Confess those times when you have looked down on people simply because their culture or way of life is different from yours. Commit yourself to learning more about the people who live and work around you.

For your Family and Friends

  • Pray “Father, I lift up ________ to You right now. My heart’s desire is that he (she) would come to saving faith in You. Lord, would You bring about circumstances in his life that get him thinking about his spiritual need?”
  • Pray that God will provide the energy needed to deal with unexpected circumstances in your family life, remembering that he will sustain you.

For the Church

  • Pray that through the music, message, prayers, and Lord’s Supper, our congregation will feel one in body and spirit (Eph. 4:3-4) as it gathers to worship.
  • Pray for more boldness to share the good news of Jesus Christ. Pray that God goes ahead, stretching out His hand, to pull more people into Christ and our church.

For the Community and Kingdom

  • Ask God to help you view every good and marvelous thing in our culture as his gift.
  • Pray for those who have the gift of evangelism and who use it in various ways. Ask that the proclamation of the gospel in cities, towns, and villages worldwide will be met with a harvest of souls.

For Sharing the Gospel

  • Pray to discern bridges between you or your church and those who are far from God.
  • Ask God to touch the lives of people in every country around the world today.

June 10: The Promise Changes Us (Peter’s Conversion)

Acts 10: 1-23, 44-48

Is God’s plan to save us and move on? Or does he want more for us? Peter learns, after years of ministry and leading the church, that he had much to learn, and God was not done with him.  This week, pray ‘take my life and let it be consecrated, Lord, to Thee. Take my moments and my days, let them flow in ceaseless praise. Here am I, all of me, take my life, it’s all for Thee.’

Personal Prayer

  • Commit yourself to living every day in the light of God’s love. Pray that you can give: 1) as an act of worship; 2) over and above; and 3) in the context of community. Pray that you can give of your time, energy, prayer, and money.
  • Confess that you do not instinctively reach out to people around you. Ask God to nudge you strongly when there is someone in your day that God wants you to share the gospel with, to reach out to.

For your Family and Friends

  • Pray that God will stir up in them a longing for Him; that God would put dynamic, winsome believers in their paths, people they like and respect, whose personalities draw them.
  • Pray for your family and friends to be personally involved in reaching the world for Christ. Ask God for world-sized vision which also has your immediate neighborhood in view.

For the Church

  • Pray that our congregation has a thirst for God as we gather to worship, that our worship together reflects a celebration of who God is.
  • Pray for our Church Plant Advisory Team (CPAT) as they work on the church’s re-launch for this fall.

For the Community and Kingdom

  • Pray for all the VBS planning and decorating this week and for the outreach to the community, that parents will have a desire to enroll their children.
  • Pray for God to move with His Spirit to bring true revival to our community and city. Ask God to move you powerfully at your place of work.

For Sharing the Gospel

  • Ask God to show you one person who will welcome you in their life, where you can share the love you have for Jesus.
  • Pray that Christians will be willing to be long-suffering in their service to those who seek Christ.

June 17: The Promise Makes it EASY (The Jerusalem Council)

Acts 15:1-21

The church was changing rapidly. New Christians vastly outnumbered the first converts. In a crucial moment a decision had to be made- what really was the mission of the church, and how would it be lived out? The future of the church was going to be decided.  Pray this week for God’s love, grace and patience as we address the changes at our church.

Personal Prayer

  • Thank God for making his blessings available to you in Christ Jesus. Give all your praise to God, for his faithfulness endures forever. With a desire to reflect God’s faithfulness, commit to recognizing his power.
  • Confess any tendency to rely on your own strength rather than God’s. Commit to becoming more sensitive to God’s ongoing presence.

For Family and Friends

  • Ask for a patient, long-suffering attitude with family members or friends who may be especially irritating to you.
  • Pray for the homes you know that are nominally Christian, that God would set their hearts on fire and may show them the urgency of his kingdom work.

For the Church

  • Thank God for godly mentors who patiently and selflessly teach you how to love and trust God.
  • Pray that the church will not be silent, but will spread the Word of God in mighty ways this week. Pray for Vacation Bible School and the community families that come.

For the Community and Kingdom

  • Pray for our church to be effective in our outreach.
  • Jesus instructed his followers to “go and make disciples of all nations” (Matthew 28:19). Pray that God will bring about the day when “all nations” have the opportunity to hear and believe the gospel.

For Sharing the Gospel

  • Ask God to bring his almighty, King-of-glory presence into our neighborhood through your own example and words.
  • Ask the Spirit to cause non-Christians whom you know (be specific) to seek out real joy in Jesus.

June 24: “Strange Ideas”

Acts 17:16-31

Few had any problem with what the church did- they fed the hungry, took care of the poor, gave homes to widows and orphans, and visited prisoners. The problem the world had with the Christians was their message- Jesus was alive, and Jesus was king! This simple message was turning the world upside down, it was getting them killed, but they just would NOT stop sharing it!  As you pray this week, pray for a better understanding of today’s culture, and how we might more effectively share what God has done in our lives.

Personal Prayer

  • Pray that you may be active in your faith, so that you will have a full understanding of every good thing we have in Christ. (Philemon vv. 6-8)
  • Confess that you don’t instinctively reach out to people around you. Pray that God will work mightily in your life, that you can understand all that you have in Jesus Christ: the depth of His love, the comfort, power, and enablement of the Holy Spirit. Ask that the Holy Spirit will bubble up in you so it overflows to others.

For your Family and Friends

  • Pray for your family and friends to spend quality time together, building firm foundations in their faith (1 Cor. 3:8-17).
  • Pray that God will give you a vision for what he is accomplishing through the lives of those who are close to you.

For the Church

  • Pray that God will give you the perseverance and strength needed to work through the differences you have with other believers in our church and your community; to show grace to others who have different opinions, tastes, and ideas.
  • Pray for Pastor George, that God will protect him, to send angels around him to keep Satan’s evil men from distracting him. “Lord Jesus, empower and enable him to be effective for Your kingdom. Open doors so Your gospel can spread through his life and our church.”

For the Community and Kingdom

  • God “commands all people everywhere to repent” (Acts 17:30). Pray specifically for unsaved persons you know, that they may repent and believe as God commands.
  • Pray for a fearlessness that can only come through the Holy Spirit. Pray that God will empower you to both reach out and to build relationships, and especially lead you to those relationships that will bear lasting fruit, people coming into His Kingdom.

For Sharing the Gospel

  • Pray that the unsaved persons you name before God may seek him, reach out for him, and find him, since he is not far from any one of us (Acts 17:27).
  • Ask God to show you the urgency of the gospel message. Ask for persistence on your part, to continue to see opportunities.
